One of the ironies of William’s work photographing wildlife is he often finds himself chasing storms rather than searching for wildlife. Favouring wide angle lenses, rarely working with more than a 200mm lens, he strives to get as much of the subject’s environment in to the shot as possible and the weather plays an important role in this.
When planning locations to work in weather patterns and seasons are a vital factor. Avoiding cooler, drier seasons when clouds are a rare sight, he favours the periods where rain is likely to be heavy and storm clouds omnipresent.
These clouds can transform the mundane in to the spectacular, particularly with this image, the tones in the sky reflecting the tones in the lions beautiful mane. The angle of the shot and the direction of the lion’s gaze give the image a style of portraiture often associated with older oil paintings, almost as if the lion is posing for his painting session in 1890.
With the lions beautiful mane filling much of the frame it is hard not to think of a mohicans head dress, symbols of strength and bravery, much like a lions mane.
