In all of William’s work planning is a vital aspect of each image, not much is left to chance. When working in the polar regions this is truer than ever.
Planning each trip to coincide the Arctic spring light is soft but daylight is constant, the sun never sets at this time of year. When searching for such an illusive animal this is an extremely useful weapon in the photographers arsenal as no matter what time you see a bear there will be enough light to photograph it. Some of William’s best sightings have taken place between midnight and 5am.
This large male bear was the ninth and last William had seen on a record trip. Having thought he’d used all the possible good luck he could have over the nine day trip there was one last encounter in store as they were approached by a lone bear, making its way to the ice edge to gaze over at the inflatable zodiac boat William was photographing from, the temperature well below zero but adrenaline ensuring the hands he had on his camera kept from shaking, much!
